Mink oil is made from the thick fatty layer minks have just under their skins. This fat is removed from the pelt when the mink is skinned and is then rendered into mink oil. Mink oil is a source of palmitoleic acid, which possesses physical properties similar to human sebum. Because of this, mink oil is used in several medical and cosmetic products. Mink oil is also used for treating/conditioning and preserving nearly all kinds of leather[1].

Botanical alternatives to mink oil as a source of palmitoleic acid include macadamia nut oil (Macadamia integrifolia) and sea buckthorn oil (Hippophae rhamnoides), both of which contain a larger percentage of palmitoleic acid (22 and 40% respectively) than does mink oil (17%).

“Trappers were probably the first people to notice the benefits of mink oil, which helped to soften their hands. They also rubbed mink oil onto their shoes, to make the leather more flexible and make the shoes more waterproof.”

“Mink oil and its fatty acids are unique among animal-derived fats and oils. The total unsaturated fatty acids in mink oil account for more than 75% of the fatty acid content, but the oil, nevertheless, has a greater oxidative stability (resistance to rancidity)… than other animal or vegetable oils.”[2] [3]

When I purchased this product I was really excited to find that it had lots of natural oils in it and no harmful and useless things like mineral oil and petroleum. All of the oils had me blinded; I did not notice that it did not have any labels stating “No Animal Testing”. I did notice the Mink oil, but did not think that it was from the animal. Remember, I did not notice there was not a “No Animal Testing”.  So… in reviewing this product, I like all the oils that it has except the Mink Oil. I like how it’s not greasy and sloppy when I apply it to my scalp. My hair and scalp soaks it up. Another plus is it does not cause tons of build-up on my scalp. Although I will not be purchasing this product anymore due to the Mink oil. I don’t want to give to the possible cruelty of the Mink.  Sorry. I have to improve my writing skills.

Ingredients: Since I know most of the ingredients and can buy them, I plan to make my scalp treatment. 😉
